Why have a wisdom tooth removed?

When a wisdom tooth doesn’t come through properly, it’s hard to keep clean. Bacteria build up around the tooth and gum line, which raises your risk of cavities and infections. A wisdom tooth can also push against the neighbouring teeth and cause discomfort or crowding.
Removing a problem wisdom tooth helps prevent recurring complaints and protects your oral health in the long run. Our specialists will take a close look at your situation and talk you through whether extraction is really the best option for you.

How the treatment works

Step 1. Making an appointment

With a referral from your dentist or orthodontist, you can easily book an appointment at our clinic. Already have a referral for a different oral surgeon? No problem, you’re very welcome at MKA Rijnmond.

At your appointment, we’ll walk you through the treatment step by step so you know exactly what to expect. Please bring your ID and a list of any medication you take, so we can give you the safest possible care. > Make an appointment here.

Step 2. Getting ready

A little preparation goes a long way towards a smooth recovery. We recommend having paracetamol and a cold pack at home before your appointment, as cooling your cheek afterwards helps reduce swelling and discomfort.

If you take blood thinners or any other medication, let us know in advance so we can plan for it during the procedure.

Step 3. Removing the tooth

Before we start, we’ll numb the area thoroughly so you stay comfortable throughout. During the procedure you shouldn’t feel any pain, just a bit of pressure.

Sometimes we remove the tooth in smaller pieces to keep things gentle and straightforward. Afterwards, we place dissolvable stitches and a gauze pad to help stop the bleeding. In most cases, the whole thing takes no more than 15 minutes.

Step 4. After the treatment

After about 30 minutes you can remove the gauze and head home to rest. Some swelling and mild soreness are completely normal in the days that follow and usually settle down quickly.

Using a cold pack and taking your pain medication on time will help you recover faster. Everyone heals a little differently, but most people feel significantly better within a week.
